PayU Lets Indian Rail Commuters Pay With WhatsApp. PayU, a Dutch provider of payment solutions, has partnered with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) in India to make payments possible through its brand-new chatbot solution for WhatsApp.

In a news release issued on Thursday, November 3, the cooperation would enable commuters using the Namma Metro system to purchase metro tickets without stopping at a ticket counter by WhatsApp messaging Bangalore Metro or by scanning a QR code.

The cooperation, according to PayU’s chief operating officer Mohit Gopal, is consistent with the company’s backing of the “Digital India” initiative of the Indian government.

“Namma Metro’s new WhatsApp Chatbot feature will be a game changer for our country’s transport sector,” Gopal continued. “Given WhatsApp’s potential as one of the primary channels for commerce and payments in the future.”

The executive director for operations and maintenance for Bangalore Metros, A.S. Shankar, continued, “This new means of reserving a metro ticket will establish a benchmark for public transit service quality in the country, and is also a part of our bigger mission to go green.”

  • Now, commuters can start a WhatsApp conversation by sending a “Hi” message to Bangalore Metro Rail at 810 555 66 77 or by scanning the QR code located at every metro station.
  • They must enter the metro line (route), starting station, and destination after deciding whether to recharge their Smart Card or One-Way Ticket.
  • They can utilize WhatsApp Pay (UPI) or alternative payment options like a credit card, debit card, net banking, wallets, or other UPI apps to complete the payment once they have confirmed their final booking information and the fare.
  • They can download a QR E-ticket (valid for one business day) after making their payment successfully, which they can use to enter the AFC gate and continue with their journey.
