The Google Chrome web browser will probably stop supporting Windows 7 and 8.1 in February 2023, Google revealed today.
After these two Windows versions’ support is terminated, the company advises Chrome users to make sure their machines are running at least Windows 10.
Google Chrome Support Manager stated, “We’ll officially cease support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 with the release of Chrome 110 (tentatively expected for February 7th, 2023).”
To keep receiving new Chrome releases, make sure your computer is running Windows 10 or later.
The Extended Security Update (ESU) program for Windows 7 and the end of support for Windows 8.1 on January 10, 2023, are listed in Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle policy, which is in line with Google’s plan to discontinue support for these platforms.
According to Statcounter GlobalStats, Windows 8.1 is now running on just 2.7% of all Windows systems while Windows 7 is still installed on over 10% of them globally.
With a market share of over 65%, Google Chrome is the most popular web browser, followed by Safari with over 18% and Microsoft Edge with 4.32%. (which uses the Chrome rendering engine with enhancements from Microsoft).
Users are advised to upgrade Google Chrome
Even though previous versions of Google Chrome will continue to function when support for Windows 7 and 8.1 ends, Google urges users to upgrade to continue receiving security updates.
This is in line with Microsoft’s recommendation for users of systems running out-of-date versions of Windows, which are no longer eligible for technical support or software upgrades and thereby expose their PCs and data to security dangers.
The Google employee continued, “Older versions of Chrome will continue to function, but there won’t be any new updates published for users on these operating systems.
If you want to continue receiving the most recent security updates and Chrome features, we advise switching to a supported Windows version before that date if you are presently using Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
