Cyberpunk Edgerunners Confirmed as Standalone Project

At the time of its release, Cyberpunk Edgerunners on Netflix, a TV series based on the computer game Cyberpunk 2077, topped the charts in 30 different countries and had a nearly perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating.

The Cyberpunk 2077 video game saw a significant increase in players as a result of the favorable exposure the series had received, which was much-needed since the game had lost a lot of players over the previous two years owing to various problems and technical issues.

Cyberpunk 2077’s first season was neatly wrapped up with a devastating conclusion, and CD Projekt Red has now revealed that there are no plans for a second season, indicating that the game was always intended to be a stand-alone undertaking.

Satoru Honma, community manager for CDPR, said Famitsu, “I would like to continue working with Japanese companies to develop more animation in the future, partially because we have received a nice response.” The phrase “we are working on Season 2 in the background” doesn’t exist because Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was intended to be a standalone product.

Honma does, however, mention that there might, at some point, be a sequel to the anime with a fresh idea and plot. Fans can anticipate Cyberpunk 2077: No Coincidence, a novel that will be released in August of the following year, to be the first significant Phantom Liberty addition.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners

A street kid trying to survive in the technology and body modification-obsessed city of the future is the subject of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a standalone, ten-episode story.

In the futuristic Californian city of Night City, dreams are bound to perish. David Martinez, a teenager from the city’s slums, is working to realize his mother’s lifetime dream of seeing him become the CEO of Arasaka, the largest security company in the world. For this reason, his mother works incredibly hard to support their family while he attends the elite Arasaka Academy.

David’s life is in ruins after an encounter with a street gang when he discovers Sandevistan cyberware, a prosthetic that gives its user superhuman speed. To inflict revenge on one of his tormentors, David implants the gadget in his back while acting out of anger.

His ambitions of ever making his mother proud are dashed when he is ejected from the academy because of this.

The stunning data thief Lucyna “Lucy” Kushinada agrees to work with David after seeing his newfound powers, giving him a path to salvation. However, David is exposed to the world of Edgerunners through Lucy, a group of cybernetic criminals who will break any law to obtain money.

Edgerunners frequently perish if the cyberware does not first render them insane, but David is willing to take any amount of risk to survive in a corrupt society.

If you’ve seen Edgerunners (spoilers ahead), you probably already know why there won’t be a season 2, considering that practically all of David’s crew members perished, including David himself, with only Lucy surviving. A second season could have followed Lucy on new journeys, but even if the Edgerunners did return, it would probably require a new cast and a new plot. It was never the plan to do that.

Honma is not shutting the door forever, just saying that nothing is planned, and if they returned, it would be a long way away and probably not even a traditional season 2 in any case. One aspect of this is animation studio TRIGGER being extremely busy and rarely doing follow-up seasons to their work in the first place.

But CDPR has made it very clear they want to expand the Cyberpunk IP. Next up is a new Cyberpunk novel, out next year. DLC for the main game is coming in 2023, and a full Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has been confirmed to be getting made.

Even still, it’s disappointing that CDPR didn’t develop a bigger plan for Edgerunners after seeing how excellent the show was. More programs belong to the same category and are not one-off offerings.

The entire four-season run of Castlevania was fantastic. There will be a second season of Riot’s Arcane on Netflix, which was probably planned from the beginning.

So, while it’s unfortunate, can understand it. Despite receiving overwhelmingly good reviews from both fans and critics, not sure Edgerunners received a lot of attention because, in opinion, it didn’t draw as many viewers as Arcane or Castlevania. So perhaps it wouldn’t have been a foregone conclusion within Netflix.

The presentation did, however, demonstrate the strength and promise of the Cyberpunk IP, which sure CDPR is eyeing for future games, animation ventures, and even maybe live-action. Watch for what happens next.
